I am a self taught sculptor. Learning the basics from my father who also was a sculptor and figuring out the particulars through many hours of trial and error. Subject matter is eclectic -- if it moves me, or interests me, or just makes me smile I am likely to sculpt it. I have been a full time professional sculptor from 2016.

I am a self taught sculptor. Learning the basics from my father who also was a sculptor and figuring out the particulars through many hours of trial and error. Sleeping Cowboy Studio is a home studio primarily run by Matt Holmes.
I was born in Lancing, Michigan and raised in Texas.
Major influence in chronological order: classical roman sculptures, select renaissance artists (Bernini, Donatello, Michelangelo, ), Francios Rude, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, Rodin, Houdin.
All my sculptures start in clay. I prefer the plastic nature of this medium. I mostly work in earthen-ware clay because it allows capture of gestural style carving along with the ability to also perform extremely detailed work if desired. I then make a waste-mold to make a cast in plaster. This is the medium prefer for finish work. From this point a final medium will be decided on based upon what I think will do justice to the expression for that particular piece.
